Facebook Stories vanish after 24 hours. That’s the whole point of them – and also why it’s annoying when a page posts a useful clip or a public announcement in a Story and you can’t find it the next day. The FBDown Facebook Story downloader saves public video Stories as HD MP4 files while they’re still live.
There is no login and no app. You paste a link, we fetch the Story’s video from Facebook, and you save it.
How to download a Facebook Story
1. Get the Story link
Stories are easiest to copy on a computer. Open facebook.com, click the Story you want, and copy the full address from the browser bar – it usually contains /stories/. On a phone, open Facebook in Chrome or Safari (not the app), open the Story and copy the address the same way.
2. Paste it into FBDown
Paste the link into the box at the top of the page and press Download. The tool checks that the Story is public and still active.
3. Save the Story video
Pick Download HD for the sharpest vertical video, or SD for a smaller file. The MP4 lands in your Downloads folder or gallery, and it stays there after the Story expires.
Which Stories can be downloaded
Facebook lets people choose who sees each Story. That choice decides what any downloader can access:
| Story audience | Can FBDown save it? |
|---|---|
| Public | Yes, while it’s live |
| Friends / Friends of friends | No |
| Custom list / Close friends | No |
| Page Stories (public pages) | Yes, while it’s live |
| Expired (older than 24h) | No |
We don’t work around these settings, and you should be wary of any site that claims it can show you private Stories “anonymously”. Such claims are either false or involve logging into accounts in ways that break Facebook’s rules – and often they’re just a trap to collect your password.
Story quality and format
Facebook Stories are vertical (9:16). Phone-recorded video Stories are typically stored at 720×1280 or 1080×1920, while Stories reshared from a post or Reel keep the quality of the original. FBDown always lists the HD rendition first so you don’t end up with a soft 480p copy by accident.
Each Story clip is saved separately. If someone posted five video clips in a row, each one is its own file.
Saving your own Stories
If you’re trying to save your own Stories, Facebook already keeps them for you – open your profile, go to Archive → Story archive, and you can download each one there, even after 24 hours (as long as the archive is switched on). FBDown is handy when you want the public Story from a page, a business, an event or a public figure, or when you’re on a device where you aren’t signed in.
Practical uses
- Event and shop announcements that are only posted as Stories: opening hours, offers, codes, addresses.
- Behind-the-scenes clips from a public page you follow, to watch again offline.
- Your business page’s Stories, to reuse in an ad or on another platform.
- Public news updates posted by organisations as short Story videos.
Stories are often personal, even when public. Saving a clip to watch later is fine; reposting it, especially when it shows other people, is a different matter. Respect the person who posted it.
Problems with Story downloads
“Story not found.” The Story probably expired or the owner deleted it. Stories also disappear early if they’re removed manually.
“Private Story.” The Story’s audience isn’t set to Public. Only the owner can change that.
My link doesn’t contain /stories/. You may have copied the profile link instead. Open the Story itself, wait for it to start playing, then copy the address.
On the Facebook app I can’t copy the Story link. The app often hides it. Open facebook.com in your mobile browser instead – the address bar shows the full Story link.
The download is silent. Some Stories use music that is muted in your region, and the file reflects what Facebook serves.
More tools on FBDown
Regular videos and Watch shows go through the main Facebook video downloader. Short vertical videos that stay on a profile are Reels – use the Facebook Reels downloader. Need just the audio? Try Facebook to MP3. Instagram Stories aren’t covered here, but Instagram Reels and posts are, with the Instagram video downloader.
